Service and Jam for Nikki Varnado

The tribute began with the showing of a video that Monique was kind enough to bring. It was done at Monique's home in Robert, Louisiana a few years ago. Nikki's daughter, Asia, who was around 10 at the time, did most of the filming and we saw a lot of cement, treetops, feet and such, but also a lot of Nikki. The sound on the video was quite clear and we were blessed once more by Nikki's beautiful voice. I hope to get a CD made of the soundtrack from the video. Her friends and family would love to have it.

After the video, Larry Garner, Pic Delmore and Miguel Hernandez began the jam with some of Nikki's favorite Larry Garner tunes. Susan followed them and we were reminded of how many times Nikki and Susan performed together on the same stage. Brandi, Nikki's sister came up a little later and sang--I had no idea she could sing. It must run in the family, because she was wonderful--I hope she will return and sing at the jam again. Thursday night jam always needs more women.
