Carpet shoppers should consider triexta’s new fiber, despite all the hype surrounding it. Each type of carpeting can have its own advantages, depending on your needs.
What is Triexta?
Triexta is synthetic carpet fiber that is made from polytrimethylene Terephthalate. It has some similarities with polyester.
Quality and durability
There are many carpets that contain both nylon and triexta. Carpets made from one fiber will not be superior to carpets made using the other.
A nylon carpet is slightly more durable than a triexta carpet. This is because it bounces back faster from compaction.
Mohawk, the manufacturer and distributor of triexta carpets claims that triexta is just as strong as nylon. A triexta carpet is as strong as a nylon carpet, and even better than a nylon carpet with the same quality. Triexta’s relative youth makes it difficult to make a comparison between them. Nylon has been used in carpeting for decades. Triexta is still relatively new. It was introduced in 2009.
Triexta is the most popular of both types of fibers in terms of warranties. Although warranties vary depending on the quality and manufacturer of the carpet, overall triexta warranties tend to be longer and more comprehensive that nylon warranties on carpets with similar quality.
An entry-level triexta from the Mohawk SmartStrand line offers a texture retention guarantee of 25 years and an unlimited stain and soil warranty. A nylon carpet with a comparable value will typically have texture retention and stain warranties for about 10 years. Triexta is more expensive than nylon, so it usually offers better warranties for the money spent.
Triexta carpets are generally less expensive than nylon. However, this does not mean that all nylon carpets are going to be less expensive than triexta carpets. A nylon carpet with the same quality will be more expensive than one made from triexta fiber because it is more expensive to make.
Mohawk’s SmartStrand label is the most popular for triexta on the market. It uses rapidly renewable corn glucose instead of petroleum to make it (up to 37%). This is good for the indoor environment as well as the environment outside. There will be less volatile organic compounds (VOCs), released from the carpet. VOCs, which are chemical compounds that evaporate in liquid or solid man-made products and have some health risks, can be found in carpets.
Although nylon does not contain renewable resources, some nylon carpets can be made with recycled content. Additionally, nylon carpets are being recycled more often, which reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
Both nylon and triexta are eco-friendly to an extent, but each one is different in how it benefits the environment. (If environmental-friendliness is your primary concern, you might consider buying carpet made of a natural fiber.)
Triexta fiber is naturally stain-resistant because it is hydrophobic, meaning that it does not absorb water-based substances. Triexta can be washed with water. This could increase the environmental benefits. To resist stains nylon must be treated. Stains that penetrate nylon can be very difficult to remove.
All in all
Triexta is a superior material to nylon for its resilience and durability. As more triexta carpets age, nylon’s advantage in durability will diminish or be reaffirmed. Triexta is a viable and worth-while alternative to nylon. It’s cost-effective, eco-friendly, stain resistant, and easy to clean.
